Toothache/Pain

  • Toothaches are typically the result of large cavities or infections in the mouth.

  • Clean the affected tooth and immediate area by carefully rinsing the mouth with warm water and flossing around the area to discharge any debris.

  • Take Tylenol or ibuprofen to alleviate any pain.

  • If the face is swollen, you may apply a cold compress to relieve discomfort.

Cut or Bitten Lip, Tongue, or Cheek:

  • Apply ice to affected areas to reduce swelling

  • If there is any bleeding, apply firm, yet gentle pressure with gauze or a soft cloth.

  • If bleeding is not controlled by simple pressure, call your doctor, or visit the nearest emergency room.

  • If the face is swollen, apply a cold compress to the area.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth:

  • Find the tooth, if possible. Hold it only by the crown and not the root.

  • If the tooth is soiled, rinse gently with water. NO soap or unnecessary scrubbing or handling of the tooth. If possible, reinsert the tooth into the socket holding in place with firm pressure.

  • If the tooth cannot be reinserted, have the patient store the tooth along the side of the cheek or store the tooth in a cup with milk or water (IMPORTANT: the tooth must be moist to stay alive!)

  • Time is crucial in saving the tooth; ideally treatment would be done within two hours.

  • Make sure to see the dentist IMMEDIATELY!!

Knocked Out Baby Tooth:

  • In nature, baby teeth naturally fall out on their own; however, if the tooth comes out prematurely due to accidental injury, it must be evaluated by the pediatric dentist.

  • Locate the tooth and bring it with you to the dentist keeping moist in milk or water.

  • Have your child rinse their mouth and apply firm pressure to the area if there is any bleeding.

Chipped or Fractured Tooth:

  • Usually this incident occurs because of trauma to the tooth.

  • Find any fragments of tooth and bring along with you to the dentist, keeping moist in either milk or water.

  • It is best to contact your dentist IMMEDIATELY (preferably on the same day of the traumatic event) to prevent infection and aid in saving the tooth.

Lost Filling

  • Fillings usually fall out as a result of recurrent decay or a chipped/fractured tooth due to trauma.

  • Brush and floss to keep the area clean until you can see the dentist.

Possible Broken/Fractured Jaw:

  • If the jaw is truly broken, it is typically very painful for the patient to open or move their jaw.

  • Hold jaw from moving.

  • Go to the nearest emergency room ASAP.
